Au pair in Switzerland

Au pair must be between the ages of 17 to 30.
You can work as an au pair in Switzerland for a maximum of 18 months.
Aupair receives room and board with a host family in exchange for approximately 25 to 30 hours of weekly work.
Au pair is paid between 600-700 CHF per month depending on the hours of work.
The host family is also required to enroll the au pair in a language school, and will cover 50% of these expenses.

Au pairs are only admitted to Switzerland if they come from EU countries, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Au pairs are individuals whose mother language is not German and the guest family’s everyday language must be German.

Citizens of EU countries do not need a work permit, only a residence permit, to work as an au pair in Switzerland.
A residence permit is issued if the individual has an employment contract. You can apply for the residence permit in the usual manner on Internet before entering the country or by post to the Immigration Office.
As an alternative you can enter Switzerland and apply for your residence permit at the resident’s registration office before starting work.

Citizens of EU accession countries Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Cyprus still require both a work permit and a residence permit. Until the definite transitional periods are agreed upon, these foreign nationals will be subject to the same conditions as citizens of non-EU states.
