Driving and car usage

Driving a car might be necessary for some au pair jobs. Countries such as USA require aupairs to have a valid driver's license as in most parts of the country driving is a must. Most American families live in the suburbs and the public transportation system doesn't exist anywhere except in the big cities.

Driving in a foreign country can be challenging even for a great driver. Families should not assume that au pair can comfortably start driving right away in a new country. It is recommended that aupair takes some driving lessons before she starts driving.

In some parts of the world obtaining a driver's license is very easy and it doesn't necessarily indicate good driving. In any case having a driver's license doesn't prove that the driver is competent enough to drive children around. Caution should be exercised especially if children will be driven around. It's the family responsibility to make sure the au pair has the enough driving experience to drive their car.

If a car is available and the family is willing to allow it for aupair's personal use, all the conditions and limitations should be discussed beforehand. Au pair is responsible to buy gas for her own personal use, but she should not be held responsible for any repairs or incidents. Sufficient car insurance should be purchased by the family to cover the aupair regardless of the purpose of the use.
