Tips for a successful aupair-family relationship

By definition, au pair is a part of the family and should be treated so. Aupairs are not housekeepers or maids, but young people who assist families with childcare. Since au pairs come from different countries, the adjustment period might be harder than expected. Neither parties should expect to get acquianted with each other right away. Adjustment period could be a couple of weeks no matter how good of a match au pair and the family are.

Sometimes families report that having an au pair is like having an older daughter or son living in the house. This is not a bad thing; however, families may want to apply rules and curfew for their au pair as they feel responsible for their wellbeing. It is not uncommon to have misunderstandings when it comes to such matters. Being open, treating each other with respect and honesty are the most important elements to make it work for both parties. Any concerns or questions, should be communicated and resolved before they turn into a problem.

Flexibility and willing to help the families raise their children in today's busy world are also very important to establish a working relationship with host families. Naturally, this doesn't mean that au pair has to do everything the family asks them to do or work any hour they want. That's why it is imperative to discuss everything from work hours to duties before the job offer is made. Au pair should never hesitate to ask the potential families the details of what they expect from an au pair before. It is not a bad idea to put everything in writing after all the terms of the job are discussed and accepted by the au pair and the parents.

Families often ask au pairs to provide references from previous employers and teachers. Aupairs should also ask the families to provide references from previous au pairs if they had one before. Both parties should feel comfortable and safe with each other before they start working and living under the same roof.
