What if it doesn't work out?

Even though it is disappointing, sometimes the family and the au pair may not be a good fit for each other. With aupair coming from a different country, this situation is certainly undesirable. It is not easy for people who barely know each other to live in the same house. Au pair comes from a different culture and sometimes there might be language barriers. No matter how good the match is it takes a few weeks for everyone to get to know each other better.

Families should keep in mind that au pair is the one who is in a foreign country probably apart from her family for the first time. She will be in need of assistance to settle in her new environment and responsibilities. It is strongly recommended that one of the parents take some time off to spend with the new aupair and the children to help with the transition.

Before a comitment is made, au pair and family should do a thorough interview to understand exactly what they expect from each other. This includes the details of the duties, housework, work hours, off days, salary, children's habits and the each other's lifestyles. There should be no hesitation about any of these issues.

Even if the parties take all the precautions, there will still be problems arising. The important thing is to be able to openly communicate about any concerns before they turn in to big problems. Constant communication, probably weekly aupair and family meetings, can help alleviate any issues.

If the problems cannot be resolved, parties should check with the authorities to find out if it is possible to change jobs/au pairs without breaking any laws regarding the aupair's visa. If a change is on the way, both parties should be accommodating each other the best they can. Aupair should continue her duties until the family finds a new au pair and vice versa.
