Homesickness

Au pairs are young people who are away from their home country. Being away from home can be hard on most young people, especially if it is the first time they are away. Host families should keep this in mind. Having an aupair brings responsibilities pretty much like having an older daughter or son.

Families should help around the au pair during the first weeks of the transition. Aupair need to get familiar with her surroundings and the best people to show her around are the family members. Adequate help must be given until the au pair settles and feel comfortable in her new environment.

If there are any other au pairs living close by, they should be introduced. Aupairs tend to get along well with each other and friends always make the stay more enjoyable. Families need to ensure that their au pair has everything she needs for a smooth transition. She will need a comfortable and quiet room to be able to rest. Internet access for her to stay in touch with her family is almost a neccessity as it will help her feel connected to her family.

Aupair is to be considered as a part of the family, not as an employee. She should be included and encouraged to participate in family outings and activities.
