References

It is highly recommended that both au pairs and families request references from each other. AupairConnect cannot and do not screen any of its users. It is the users' responsibility to do all the necessary research before hiring takes place.

Ideal references for an au pair are the old employers, if any, and teachers. Childcare references would be great if the aupair has any previous experience or currently taking care of children. Most au pairs usually have previous babysitting experience and should be able to provide references.

The best references for a family are previous aupairs or nannies. If those are not available, neighbors are a good option as au pair would meet them in person if she gets the job. Therefore, a neighbor would most likely be an honest reference.

References from family and friends do not count as reference. However due to the distance and language issues, it might be hard to identify who is giving the reference. Prepare all the questions beforehand on a piece of paper and take notes. Ask certain questions and ask them twice to make sure you are not getting conflicting answers.

A clean police record can be requested as most jurisdictions in the world readily have such services especially for employmet purposes. These documents are requested by and given to the person whom the background check is done.
