The permit is valid for a maximum of 12 months and must be extended after the first 6 months. The host family is required to submit a formal notification of employment and a contract of employment to the Austrian Labor Authorities (AMS) before aupair's visa application.

Click here for the au pair contract

Contract of employment must detail the conditions of the employment, weekly work hours, accommodations, amount of weekly salary and help with education/language school. Au pairs in Austria usually work for 25 hours a week and receive a weekly pocket money of 240 Euros.

Submission does not have to be made by an authorized au pair agency.

If you like apply without the help of an agency, click here for the forms and information

The labor authorities will issue a confirmation authorizing the employment. Au pair can only apply for an Austrian residence permit at an Austrian embassy or consulate.

AUSTRALIA
Australia does not have an official au pair program. US citizens can obtain a 4-month Working Holiday Visa from BUNAC. Click here for more information

If you are between 18-30 years old and a national of one of the following countries, you can go to Australia as an au pair by obtaining a 12-month "Working Holiday Visa":
the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Malta, The Republic of Cyprus, The Republic of Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan

Most working holiday visa applications may be made over the internet. Click here to apply over the internet
If you are not eligible to apply for a working holiday visa over the internet (Cyprus, BNO and Taiwan passport holders), please complete the form 1150, and contact the relevant visa processing office for your type of passport.

Where can I apply?

The Working Holiday visa cannot be granted in Australia. All visa applications must be made overseas.

Holders of the following passports are able to apply for a Working Holiday visa in any country (except Australia):
Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and United Kingdom

Holders of the following passports must apply in their country of passport:
Japan, Malta, Republic of Cyprus, Republic of Korea

Holders of passports issued by the authorities of Taiwan or the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China must apply for their visas in Taiwan and Hong Kong respectively.

Do I need a return ticket?

You are required to possess a return ticket, or sufficient funds for a return fare. You are also required to possess sufficient funds for the initial stages of your holiday.
Please be aware that you may be asked to provide evidence of your return airfare and funds on arrival in Australia. Evidence of funds can take the form of bank statements or savings books.
Further information on funds required is available from your nearest Australian mission.

How long can I stay in Australia on a Working Holiday visa?

A Working Holiday visa gives you 12 months to travel to Australia from the date the visa is granted, and allows you to stay in Australia for 12 months from the date you first enter Australia.

You can leave and re-enter Australia within the 12 months from the date of initial entry to Australia. However, if you depart Australia during your 12 month stay, you are not able to recover in any way the period of time spent outside Australia.

What are the work conditions?

Working Holiday makers are permitted to do any kind of work of a temporary or casual nature. However, if you intend to work in your occupation in Australia, you should be aware that registration or licensing may be required.

Work condition 8108, which is attached to the Working Holiday visa, states that "the holder must not be employed in Australia by any one employer for more than 3 months, without the prior permission in writing of the Secretary (of the Department)".

The main purpose of your visit should be to holiday and travel. Any work should be incidental to supplement funds; periods of work should be broken up by periods of holiday and travel. Working beyond the three months with the same employer without the required permission may result in your visa being cancelled and you may be required to leave Australia. You are not permitted to extend your employment beyond 3 months with any one employer through the use of business affiliates and/or sub-contracting arrangements, or by using different employment agencies (to remain in the same job).

In practical terms, this means that you cannot work for longer than 3 months in the same position, in the same location, doing the same work.

Do I need travel/health insurance?

Medical treatment in Australia can be very expensive and it is advisable to have both travel and health insurance.
You are strongly advised to take out private health insurance to cover yourself in Australia unless there is a reciprocal health insurance arrangement between Australia and your country of citizenship.
Enquiries about the possible existence of such arrangements should be made when you apply.

DENMARK
Citizens from Nordic countries are not required to obtain a residence permit, and may freely travel to and work in Denmark.

Citizens of other EU/EEC countries who would like to be an au pair, should apply for a residence certificate from the local authority "statsamt".

Citizens of the eight new eastern European members of the EU (the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia) must apply to the Immigration service for an au pair residence permit.

Conditions for the au pair and the host family

In order to obtain a residence permit as an au pair, it is mandatory for the applicant to meet certain mandatory language and cultural standards in order to reap full benefits from an au pair stay in Denmark.
This means that the applicant should be able to speak and understand a reasonable level of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English or German. In addition, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

1. The au pair must be between 17 and 29 years of age.

2. A written contract must be drafted between the host family and the au pair (and the au pair's parents, if the applicant is under 18). The Danish Immigration Service has drafted a standard contract which must be used.

Click here for the au pair contract.

3. The au pair must receive at least DKK 2900 per month in pocket money from the host family.

4. The au pair must receive free room and board. The au pair's must have his/her own room and it must be located in the host family's residence.

8. At least one of the parents in the host family must be a Danish citizen.

9. The host family may not receive public funds as their primary means of support under the Active Social Policy Act. The host family must swear to the Immigration Service that the family does not receive public funds as their primary means of income. The Immigration Service has drawn up a preprinted statement that is to be used.

10. A condition for the issuance of a residence permit is that the applicant has not previously held a Danish residence permit. See below for further information regarding extension of an au pair residence permit.

Special information about the residence permit

An au pair receives a residence permit but not a work permit, as the tasks undertaken by the au pair for the host family are not considered as work. An au pair may have neither paid nor unpaid work in addition to his/her duties as an au pair.

Despite this fact, the relationship between the au pair and the host family is regarded as an employee/employer relationship, and is thus subject to Danish laws regarding vacation and taxation. The tax authority in the municipality where the host family lives can answer questions regarding taxation. Questions regarding vacation regulations should be directed to Feriekontoret, Finsensvej 78, 2000 Frederiksberg C; tlf.: 38 14 84 84 (telephone consultation: Mon. - Thurs. 12 - 15, Fri. 12 - 14).

Residence permit- How long can I stay in Denmark as an au pair?

An au pair is granted a residence permit for one year, but not for longer than the length of the au pair contract. A six-month extension can be granted. In exceptional cases, the residence permit can be extended to allow the au pair residence for combined maximum total of two years.

If an au pair applies for an extension of his/her residence permit, he/she may continue to work as an au pair while the Immigration Service processes the application, but only if he/she continues as an au pair for the same family and under the conditions of the original contract. The contract between the au pair and the host family must also be extended and sent in together with the application. An au pair may not begin with a new host family until the service has granted permission to do so.

USA
You can find au pairs or nannies who are already in the US through our site if you don't want to pay agency fees. Otherwise, USA has an official au pair program run by twelve government designated agencies. By law, only these government approved agencies can bring au pairs from overseas on a J-1 visa. You can find your au pair at AupairConnect.com and the agencies can provide the documents that are needed for a J-1 visa and do a background check on your au pair. Au pair would need to register with a cooperating agency in her country and apply for a J-1 visa at the US embassy or consulate. This visa is valid for 1 year. You can also find a great deal of information about the aupair program at the web site of US Department of State.
